Pottery Barn Knock-Off: Seagrass Headboard

One of the first rooms I wanted to put together upon moving into our new house was the guest room. It’s located in the basement, which is actually perfect as it gives guest their own space and is on the opposite end of the house where the kids are not. However, it’s a little dark down there and the green walls sure don’t help. In my effort to try and fix up the guest room without immediately painting the walls (although it’s something I still want to do) I started looking for other ways to brighten up the room and make it more cozy and relaxing.

In my search I stumbled upon THIS Seagrass Headboard from Pottery Barn’s. I thought the texture and color of the seagrass would go great against the green walls of the guest room, giving it that natural feel, but that $340 price tag didn’t seem so “natural” for me to spend! So in my attempt to be crafty and save some money I started to look for some way to do many own. I came up with this DIY seagrass headboard using a seagrass rug I found on Craigslist. The whole headboard cast me just under $75 to make!

The supplies:

– 4’x8’x3/4″ MDF board or OSB

(Use whatever is cheapest. We found ours in the clearance bin at Home Depot.)

– Seagrass rug

– King size quilt batting: Thick

– staple gun and staples

(I would recommend getting some longer staples when doing the rug since it’s so thick)

– jigsaw

– heavy duty hanging hooks or 1×3’s for the legs cut at desired height.

I’ll be honest in saying that there would be a few things that I would do differently if I did this project over again or maybe that’s just the perfectionist talking in me. All in all though I’m happy with how the headboard turned out!

I still have a few more projects for the guest room before I call it “complete” including painting it, a dresser redo and some more wall art. For now, it still gives our guests a nice place to sleep!

Custom Family Illustrations

I have a confession to make… It has been almost a week since I’ve even touched a computer and it has felt rather refreshing! I’ve just gotten back from a camping trip with no cell service and no distractions, just my beautiful family, the great outdoors, and a good book (which I’ve hardly put down since I started it several days ago). With all that has been going on with the blog and our shop opening up next month, it was a much needed break to relax and spend with my family without any distractions. Now that I’m back and refreshed I have a little “show-and-tell” project to share with you today.

Hanna and I both adore the custom family portrait illustrations that are starting to gain popularity. While I myself am no artist, Hanna has been asking for the past couple of months that I draw one up for her cute little family, but I’ve been dragging my feet about it. The task seemed rather daunting and intimidating, but I finally decided to give it a try. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun and I quite liked the results for my first try.

Family Illustration

Some of our favorite artists include: Ink & Bobbin, Henry James Paper Goods, Susanna Avila Art, and Sophie & Lili. I would love to have a custom family illustration from any of these talented artists someday, but for now I guess I’ll have to settle for my novice drawing skills.

What do you think of custom family illustrations: love them, or hate them?

How to Lengthen A Dress/Skirt

I don’t know about you, but I am seeing SO many cute dresses out there on the market! When I was in Oregon a few months back visiting Sara we found this super cute, summery dress at Old Navy. I just fell in love with it, especially the shift style of the dress. They are my favorite kind of dress since I don’t have much of a defined waist. The only problem with this dress was that is was a little too short for my liking. Standing up was an OK length, but if I tried to walk or sit down it just wasn’t working for me.

How to Lengthen a Dress

Sara and I got this great idea to just sew an extender piece to the lining of the dress and have it hang down underneath the top part of it. So I bought the dress and we went home with a plan to make it my “perfect” summer dress.

Here is the before picture.

How to Lengthen a Dress 4

Most dresses and skirts have sewed in lining or slips in them so this is the perfect opportunity to sew on an extending piece of fabric without bothering the hem of the actual dress/skirt. Plus color blocking is so in right now! Just ask Sara and her Color Block Party Skirts that are coming soon to the shop!

So if you have a dress/skirt that needs to be a tad longer here is a simply “how-to” on making that happen.

1. First you’ll need to find some fabric that will go well with your dress/skirt. I used a navy linen fabric that Sara had on hand that worked perfect with the dress!

2. Next measure the width of the lining of the dress and how much longer you want your dress. Take the width and add 1/2 inch for seam allowance and double the length you want the extender to be plus add 1/2 to that for seam allowance. Then cut out two pieces at those measurements. So for my dress, the lining was 22.5 inches wide and I wanted it to extend 5 inches in length. Therefore my 2 pieces were 23 x 10.5 inches.

3. With right sides together, sew/serge the two sides of your pieces together. Afterwards you should have a tube of fabric

4. Fold that tube of fabric in half with the seams inside and iron.

5. Lastly, sew/serge your extender piece to the lining of your dress and iron that seam.

Outdoor Summer Dinner Party

Besides blogging, one of our favorite things to do together is to host a great party full of delicious food, good company, and fun decorations. Since we bought our house last fall, I’ve been itching to throw an outdoor party on our spacious deck. With Sara and her family here visiting, and with it being our one year blog anniversary, we decided to throw a little outdoor summer party to celebrate. Usually we have things planned out several weeks in advanced, but besides our dinner menu everything else came together last minute.

You might be wondering how we managed to pull this off with such a limited budget in such little time? Honesty, we were quite amazed ourselves, but in the end we were very pleased with the turnout. It was the perfect combination of fun and classy. The key to throwing together a nice dinner table layout with limited time and money is being creative and resourceful. Everything you see on the table, besides the white flower centerpieces and the aqua colored plates, were things we already owned that we used or re-purposed.

I think what really made the table, were the fun ikat patterned chargers. And would you have guessed that we made them for under $2 a piece?! About a year ago Sara found a bunch of these gold charges at Goodwill for $1. They have truly been a great purchase as we have used them at several other occasions. For this outdoor summer party we wanted something a little more bright and playful, so we purchased some wrapping paper to cover them with. Below is a simple tutorial on how we did it.

First, trace around the charger on the back side of your wrapping paper, then cut it out. Make sure to cut the circle about 1/2 inch bigger than the actually size the of the plate. Since you only see the outside edge of the plate we decided to only cover the edges, in which case we measured and cut out the middle as well.

Second. use spray adhesive to bond the paper to the plate.

Flip the plate over and spray the excess paper with glue, then fold over to the underside of the plate.

Lastly, spray a clear acrylic coating or sealant over the top for added durability and protection from food and water.

Allow each plate to dry before using, then add these fun new chargers to your table setting for some added color and interest.

4th of July Clothespin Wreath

I can already hear fireworks at night going off through the neighborhood, the colors red, white and blue are showing up everywhere and the planning of BBQ’s is in the air; this going to show that the 4th of July is right around the corner! Take if from me, it’s not too late or very hard to get festive.
It seems like the last few days I have either been preparing for Sara and her family to come stay with us (cleaning, shopping, etc.) or working on up coming things for this blog. This has left the 4th of July as a major after thought! However, after seeing this clothespin wreath floating around Pinterest I knew I wanted to at least do that.
I scoured Pinterest for the original link to the clothespin wreath and never found it so I decided to go ahead and make my own and share the exact “what ya need” and “how to” with all of you.
The supplies for this project are pretty basic and cheap; all of which I was able to get a the one-stop-shop of Walmart.
– 12 in wreath frame
– 2 packs of clothespins (This wreath takes 60 clothespins to make but there are only packs of 50 at Walmart which are $1 each.)
– Glitter Stars foam stickers
– red, white and blue paint (acrylic or spray)
– paint brush
Start by dividing out your 60 clothespins. For mine I painted 15 blue, 22 white and 23 red. Next step is to paint them. I did it the hard way and painted each one by hand using acrylic paint. Surprisingly and a little bit to my embarrassment I didn’t even think about spray painting them until afterwards. It would have been MUCH easier.
But if you are going to paint them by hand I’ll let you know what I did. I used the foam brush and painted everything but the back and part of the sides. Then I took a smaller brush to get the inside of the clothespin where it would show. In the picture above you can see kind of how I went about the “lazy” way of painting them.
Once all the clothespins are dry stagger them on the wreath frame doing all the blue clothespins together then 4 reds followed by 4 whites. Lastly, at the foam stars to the blue clothespins and hang!
To add a little more to my 4th of July decor I spray painted some stars on our front lawn using some white field spray paint and hung up our flag.
See! Three very simple and easy ways to get in the patriotic spirit; all which can be done in an afternoon for under $20!
Sara and I hope you all enjoy your 4th of July! We know we will be and are SO excited that we get to be spending it together!

Floral Stamped T-Shirt Refashion {Using Celery}

Big floral prints are all the rage in fashion right now and I’m all for jumping on the that band wagon. It’s bold, classic, and feminine… everything I like when it comes to my wardrobe. And, for all you “DIY-ers” out there I’ve discovered a way for you to create this bold fashion statement yourself. The answer: celery. I know it sound weird, even my husband gave me the “you’re crazy” look when I told him I wanted to buy celery for a t-shirt refashion. But the results were fabulous, and the steps to re-create this look are so simple!
1. Cut top off of celery.

2. Dip in paint. I recommend using fabric paint; however, you can also mix a textile medium with acrylic paint to make your own.

3. Stamp on fabric. Be sure to place a piece of cardboard inside your shirt  before you begin stamping so the paint does not bleed to the other side.

Below are some of my sources of inspiration. If you can’t tell, I’m kind of into the color blue right now.

Sew Inspired: Sewing Room Update

As you may have gathered from my previous posts, I’ve been doing a lot of sewing lately. In fact, almost all of my spare time in the last couple of weeks has been spent in my sewing room. And it is my philosophy that when you spend a lot of time in a certain space it should be one that inspires and one that you love.
I will admit that my sewing room never looks quite this clean and organized when I’m actually working on a sewing project, but it is a space that I enjoy being in. While it is nothing grand, I believe a home is what you make it. Sure, I’d love a big sewing room filled with lots of light, a big cutting table, and lots of shelving to store my fabric and crafts; but the truth of the matter is this is what I have the means for right now and that’s ok… I still love it! I’m sure many of you are in the same boat where you’re still in school or just starting out and I’m here to tell you that you don’t need a lot of money or space to make something beautiful and functional.
The only items that I actually purchased for this space were the “S-E-W” letters, the pegboard hooks, the watercolor floral photo, and the table (a past purchase from craigslist for $10); everything else I already had. The pegboard, the wooden letters, and the photo frame I brighten up with some paint I had left over from other projects. I’ve been going a little crazy with my silver metallic spray paint. The diy aluminum/silver metal look has started to become a theme throughout my house (see more of my projects: DIY Silver Lamps | Faux Stainless Steal Dressers).

As for the gorgeous skirt, it’s a little sneak peak of what you’re going to see in our shop that is opening up this summer!
