Back to School Clothes Shopping Printable and Tips

Getting ready for the kids to go back to school is an exciting and crazy time! As mothers, we are inwardly looking forward to at the very least a couple hours a day that are kid free, or short a few kids to lessen the chaos. On the other hand it’s quite the chore to round up all the supplies the kids need, make sign-up deadlines, get back into a fixed schedule and do everything else that comes along with school starting. However, today Sara and I are teaming up with 14 other bloggers to bring you some great Back to School projects to help you get ready for the new school year and make your life a little easier!

1. Elizabeth Joan Designs 2. Making It In The Mountains 3. Stripes and Polka Dots
4. For My Love Of 5. Home. Made. Interest. 6. Restless Arrow
7. Little Red Brick House 8. Little House Of Four 9. Cuddles and Chaos
10. Our House Now A Home 11. Kent Heartstrings 12. The DIY Mommy
13. Curly Crafty Mom 14. Houseologie 15. Canary Street Crafts

Today I’m sharing a FREE printable and tips for back to school clothes shopping that will hopefully make it more fun and meaningful, by getting the kids involved, as well as making that “to-do” list to get ready for school less stressful!

Back to School Clothes Shopping check list

This idea originated from my own childhood memories. Growing up in a small town we would have to travel into the city (4 hours away) to do a lot of our shopping. So every summer before school started we would take a “school shopping” trip and make a weekend out of it. Some of my favorite memories are when my mom would take Sara and I in by ourselves and we would have a girl’s weekend shopping for clothes, going to movies and out to dinner. Reading this I’m sure some of you are getting more stressed out thinking about adding more to your plate and subtracting even more out of your bank accounts to do a whole shop and play weekend, but really something similar can be done on just about any budget and with any schedule. I’ll show you how!

TIP 1: When thinking about school clothes, here are the two things I go by: first, make sure each child has at least 5 complete outfits, one for each day of the school week. This is also a good time to get some new shoes, underwear, church clothes and a jacket/coat. Second, save the nice new clothes you buy for just the school week and let the kids wear their old clothes on the weekends when they will probably tend to be a little harder on clothes.

TIP 2: Before you do any shopping go through your kids things and decide what still fits and what will work for the coming school year. If you’re like me and have young kids chances are you won’t find too much as they’ve either grown out of everything or most clothes are worn out from all the summer playing.

TIP 3: Now that you know what you need, make a budget for how much you want to spend on school clothes. You’ll be surprised at how this can fit just about any budget depending on where you shop. If you live in, or near, a city you will be able to shop the sales and use coupons. You can also check out our post on “How to Save Big on Kids Clothes”.

TIP 4: Although it’s not necessary to go all out when school shopping it’s a great time to make it a fun date with you’r child, make it about them and make some memories. One way is to use the free printable checklist I created that you can download below. This will allow kids who can’t read yet to see what they need and then get to color in or mark off items as they get them. This is much better then having you’re kids laying bored on the ground or wondering around the store as you search through clothes that will work.

Over the weekend I took my daughter on a mommy-daughter date clothes shopping. She’s had a growing spurt this summer so pretty much everything is too short. I gave her her checklist and let her help me pick out clothes for her. After we were done at a store she colored in each item we got. Once we were done shopping we got some ice cream for a job well done! I’m looking forward to making more memories with my girls and this being an every year tradition!

Sarah over at Little Red Brick House created this beautiful Sunburst Mirror.  Can you believe it was made out of wood shims?

Kristi from Making it in the Mountains bought this old dining room table for $50.  With a little paint and stain she turned it into a beautiful addition to her dining room.
This sunshine string art from Home Made Interest would be such a fun addition to any room.

Virginia from Fynes Designs took a risk and went bold by painting an old dresser coral.  It adds such a fun pop of color to her room.

Lindsey from I’m Always Nesting recently updated her hall bathroom and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Let’s Celebrate!

DSC_04871_edited-1

One year ago my sister convinced me to start blogging about my sewing adventures. She set me up with a blog account and even custom designed the whole thing. For those of you have followed along from the beginning, you may remember “Sew Loved”. Slowly I added content to my new site and when I felt insecure I’d call up my sister and she’d give me the confidence to go on. Yes it was me doing the projects and writing up the posts, but Hanna was always behind the scenes editing my photos, proof reading my posts, linking them up, and rooting me along. Six months later we decided to join forces and Stripes and Polka Dots was born.

As our little blog has continued to expand, we’ve decided to make the switch from Blogger to WordPress. We’ve completely redesign the blog, so feel welcome to stick around and check things out! As you navigate your way around, please let us know the things we can do to make it more enjoyable and user friendly.

Again, we’d like to recognize the many supporters and followers who’ve made this blog what it is today. We’ve enjoyed every minute of it and love the many new friends we’ve made! In celebration of our blogiversary and a successful switch-over, we plan to party it up all week… and you all are invited!! Help spread the word and invite your friends!

Because of Him

Wicker baskets, colorful Easter eggs, and bunny shaped candy continues to fill the stores as Easter draws near. As children, we always looked forward to dying Easter eggs, searching the yard for plastic eggs filled with money and chocolate, and getting fun Easter baskets filled with goodies. And while these are all beloved childhood traditions, we wanted to take today to reflect on the real reason we celebrate Easter– that is, Jesus Christ the Savoir of the world. We celebrate His life, His death, and His triumph over the grave. Because of Him, there is no end only beginnings. Christ paid the price for our sins, died on the cross, and rose from the dead– providing a way for each of us to return and live with God and our loved ones someday.
Because of Jesus Christ we don’t have to say good-bye forever at the grave, but only for a short time. Also, because He suffered for us and for our sins, we are not alone in our trails and struggles. He knows us. He knows our pain, our sorrows, and our weakness. Without question, Hanna and I have both felt Christ’s abiding love as we have faced trails of our own; both big or small. As we have mentioned before, Hanna and I are perfectionist in almost everything we do– it is sometimes more of a weakness than a strength. We’ve always know the kind of women we wanted to be and we’re constantly striving for it, but we are only human. There are times when we loose our tempers; when other things gain precedence over our family; when we’re not as loving as we should be; or when we’ve made wrong decisions. We’re constantly falling short, but because of Christ’s great sacrifice there is no end to how many times we can start again.
This Easter we invite you to share the blessing that are yours each and every day because of Jesus Christ. Share with us through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by commenting below using the #BecauseofHim. We challenge you to remember the Savior in your Easter celebrations this year and allow His life and His ultimate sacrifice to help you start again and work miracles in your life. We only say this because we know it to be true. We have experienced it in our own lives, and it has brought more hope, joy, love, and happiness then we ever thought possible. We look forward to your thoughts this week as we prepare for Easter!

The Liebster Award

Hello friends. I mentioned on Friday that I would be flying to Utah over the weekend to spend a fun-filled week with my sister Hanna. Well, after a slight emergency, a surgery, and several phone calls, we have pushed our trip back a couple of weeks. Hanna was in Florida over the weekend with her husband and ended up having appendicitis, which required that her appendix be removed. Since having surgery, she is not allowed to travel for a few days. She spent several nights in the hospital, but is now resting and recovering at their beach side hotel (complimentary from her husband’s work). Our mother is watching her girls, and Hanna is already starting to gain much of her health back.
Needless to say, things have been a bit crazy in our neck of the woods. However, in the mist of all the craziness we also had a lovely surprise—our little blog has been nominated for the Liebster Award! I know, we thought it too— “What on earth is a Liebster Award?”
The Liebster Award is basically a “pay-it-forward” award given by other bloggers to recognize/award up and coming bloggers. It’s a great way to find new blogs and meet new friends. Stripes and Polka Dots was graciously nominated by Katelyn over at Learning, Creating, Living. The rules are: mention the person who nominated you with a link to their blog. Answer the eleven questions given to you. Nominate 11 other up and coming bloggers (that have under 500 followers). Make up a new set of 11 questions for your nominees. Here are the 11 questions Katelyn asked us:

Why did you start blogging?
Hanna and I are twin sisters and best friends that currently live 830 miles apart. Blogging allows us to continue doing the things we love to do together even though we no longer live near each other.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not busy?
I think it can be said for the both of us that when a free moment presents itself (which is usually rare), we love to catch-up on a much loved TV show or relax and read a good book.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Surprisingly both of our favorite movies are from the 80’s– Dirty Dancing and Can’t Buy Me Love. But in all honesty, we love any good chick-flick as much as the next girl.

How would you describe yourselves in three words?
Quite, caring, perfectionists!

Where is your favorite place to shop and why?
Hands down, we’d both agree on Target. Their products are cute, stylish, and inexpensive– a win, win for everyone!

What is your favorite blog post you’ve ever done and why?
We are both fairly new to blogging and therefore don’t have much to pull from, but one of my favorite posts was my New Years post. It was kind of an “awe-ha” moment for me that has changed my perspective on life. Hanna says that her favorite post was her DIY Numbers Poof because she has never had a project go so smoothly and turn out so good at the same time.

What is your favorite outfit to wear?
We like to keep it simple with a pair of skinny jeans, a basic top, a jacket/cardigan, a great statement necklace/scarf and a pair of flats. This is pretty much our everyday look– stylish, comfortable, and functional.

What is your favorite place you’ve ever been and why?
Hanna says, probably Germany because it was the first bit trip she’d ever been on with her husband to a place he’d come to love after living there for two years. Plus they saw some pretty amazing sights! And me, I’m going to have to go with Mt. Wheeler peak; the second highest peak in Nevada with an elevation of 13,065 feet. I’m a sucker for breath-taking views, plus I just loved the feel of being on top of the world.
If you could do one thing you’ve always wanted to do at this very moment, what would it be?
Go to the Mood fabric store in New York and have enough money to buy anything my heart desired.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?
One of our main purposes in starting a blog was to be try and create a sense of community and support among our readers and foster new friendships. Being a stay-at-home mom, or just a mom in general, can be isolating at times. We absolutely love the opportunity that we have through blogging to meet, inspired, and be inspired by other women.

How’d you come up with your blog name?
We both happen to really like stripes and polka dots in all its forms. They are timeless patterns that never goes out of style just as we hope will not our blog either.
We love and nominate the following blogs:
Erin and Emily @ Elizabeth Joan Designs
Jennifer @ Brave New Home
Allison @ Freshly Completed
Janelle @ Janelle in Real Life
Daniela @ Put a Bird On It
Kelly @ The Little Things
Stephany @ The Bee’s Knees
Sarah @ This Sarah Loves
Amy @ Homey Oh My

Questions for my nominees are:
1. Who is your hero?
2. What is your biggest fear?
3. What is your favorite food?
4. What is your favorite book?
5. What do you enjoy most about blogging?
6. How did you come up with your blog name?
7. What blog/website are you most obsessed about?
8. What is your favorite aspect of yourself/body?
9. What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
10. What is one of your New Year’s resolutions for this year?
11. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
